In North West England the metropolitan county of Merseyside spans both banks of the River Mersey and comprises five boroughs – St. Helens, Wirral, Knowsley, Sefton and the city of Liverpool.
The vast majority of the land use is urban, although there are parts that are suburban and semi-rural. Liverpool City Centre is a focused business district, and each of the five boroughs additionally has at least one major town.
Manufacturing retains a strong influence on Merseyside, including innovative new sectors such as biomedical and advanced engineering, and after retail is known to be a strong job-creating sector. The services sector is also increasingly at the forefront of the local economy.
