Often referred to as the Scottish Highlands, this is a huge area of north western Scotland that covers both the mainland and the many islands to the west, as well as Orkney and Shetland in the north.
Sometimes called the Highlands and Islands, its only major city is Inverness in the north east. The countryside is wild and spectacular and sparsely populated. Tourism and the hospitality industry are significant employers throughout the area, and agriculture, fisheries and forestry provide employment.
There are opportunities to be involved in the growing renewables industry, and jobs in health, transportation and logistics, education and public administration may be available.
